I once put my headphones under the railway bridge around the corner and tried to record the reverb in stereo. Didn't work. Guess I should have used speakers instead.

You could try a traffic tunnel at night. If you're lucky you'll have dry weather and no traffic.

In the '50s and '60s they used metal bars and sheets. They sound terrible.

Nah, I would advise software, not hardware.
