While Anton Bruckner (1824-1896) was reputed to have been a superb organist, he left very few completed works for the instrument.
His skill was in his wonderful improvisations, and the few organ works the do survive oftem seem to have been "sketched," with "improvisatory elaboration" intended for performance.
The "Vorpsiel und Fuge c-Moll" comes from his time at the monastery of St. Florian, and is dated January 15, 1847.
While the "Fuge" is a completed work, the "Vorpsiel" seems to have been an instnace where elaboration may have taken place.
For a "small" work, it is highly dramatic, and well-suited to the Utrecht acoustics.
I've used the Doblinger edition, edited by Hans Haselböck.
I have a "technical question" that perhaps someone can answer- what causes the SIGNIFICANT out-of-tuneness at around
2:20?
It almost sounds like "insufficient wind," but the effect is very unpleasant.
This is loaded in surround, with everything maxed-out in 64 GB of memory. I'm wondering if I have the "polyphony" setting too high...
I'm really struggling with the hearing, but hope to upload some more items during the week...
