The Fugas on the name B-A-C-H represent in many ways a special case in the Schumann production.
"This is a work that I worked all last year to make it in a way worthy of the high name it bears, a job that I believe will survive perhaps longer of my other", so he said in reference to Schumann 'op. 60.
On one side are pieces in their own right, the other are connected at the same time the principle of the change, as they are realized in multiple themes, rhythmic forms and atmospheres that can be extracted from those four notes that make up the theme BACH: from this side of the op. 60 by Schumann is certainly closer to the works of Liszt and Reger on the name B-A-C-H, from which, however. It is different, at first glance, to a much more conservative style.
This fuga in my opinion is an absolute masterpiece of Schumann. For compositional skill, beauty of counterpoint, modern but with references to the great art of Bach. It 'a tribute to the composer of Eisenach genius, that he deeply admired.
