Overdevelopment - Day 66

I am currently traveling by sailboat (Singlehanding 33' Gaff rigged cutter) from NY harbor to Melbourne, FL.

I am currently close to the SC-GA border.

I am blogging the trip and creating musical sketches as I go along. I seldom have enough Internet access to post to Contrebombarde, but since this evening I do, I will upload some of the pieces. In general, they are quasi-improvisatory, for HW organ, synthesizers and found audio.

One of the striking features of traveling the ICW is the natural scenery. Equally striking is the way in which this natural scenery is giving way to rapid development - particularly of mass built, upscale homes. There are whole stretches of waterfront described in the intracoastal guide books (2016 edition - so probably complied in 2015) described as "wilderness" that are in fact now construction sites or brand new houses.
This piece begins with a simple, hymn like section - programmatically speaking representing the simple beauty of the natural world. As this section concludes an ominous discord signals change. We then here the same theme but electronically "corrupted" - the theme is joined in a kind of disjunct canon by other equally corrupted renditions - at first the juxtaposition, while somewhat chaotic is not entirely unpleasant but as the faux canon is added to it becomes clear the idea has become - overdeveloped and in turn gives way to an ugly drone. A new theme is heard - representative of nature mourning the loss. The birds, animals, insects, plants, trees, rocks - quietly join the dirge. (Organ French horn stop and pedal point). As if to say that "progress" does not care, the corrupted theme returns in an even more flippant fashion. Nature attempts to rebel ("big organ" section) but the rebellion as man and nature both realize is futile. What can the natural world do against the machinations of man and economics? The piece concludes with nature resigned to to her eventual demise
