Composer: Johann Adam Hiller (?)
Sample Producer: Voxus Virtual Organs
Sample Set: Müller Grote of Sint Bavo extended
Software: Hauptwerk IV
Genre: Baroque
Description:
The Sibelius academy hosts a vast collection of manuscripts, some of which are available online. One of these manuscripts contains organ music by an unnamed composer. It consists of 6 trio’s, 3 choral preludes for organ, and some sketches for a piece for pianoforte, violino and basso.
One of the choral preludes is mostly identical to a piece I published earlier: a prelude on “Freu dich sehr, o meine Seele” (http://www.contrebombarde.com/concerthall/music/20235). The source for that publication was the journal published by Johann Adam Hiller between 1766 and 1770. Most of the music published in that journal has a composer attributed to it. Except for some of the organ pieces. Since Hiller was an organist himself, I made the supposition that Hiller was the composer of these pieces and refrained from mentioning his own name in his own journal.
Could it be that this manuscript is from Hiller as well? There is of course no way for me to be certain. The style of the pieces is this manuscript is not at odds with the pieces from Hiller’s journal I already published, nor the pieces I still have to publish. So, it could be Hiller’s work.
I tentatively ascribe the works to Hiller, but with a question mark to indicate the uncertainty of it.

The six trio’s are attractive works, a bit more difficult and musically engaging than the trio’s by Sorge. As such they could be used in an educational setting to fill the gap between the trio’s by Sorge and the more demanding trio’s of Bach, Krebs, etc.
