Description: | The organbook of Matthias Rottenau (Mus. Ms. 40615 from the Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin) contains numerous works from unnamed composers. Perhaps they are from Rottenau himself, perhaps they are from other composers. As far as I could find, most of them are still unpublished. Somehow music with no name attached to it is less interesting then music whose composer is known. Yet who knows what treasures are hidden is this vast volume of anonymous compositions? Here is the first transcription I made of one of these anonymous works. It’s chosen at random, I can’t even tell if it is typical for the anonymous compositions or not. In the months or even years to come, I’ll transcribe more of these anonymous works. At the end of this journey of discovery perhaps I can speculate some more about the possible composer(s) of these works.
This first one is an elegant ricercar. Not as involved as the ricercar from Erbach I trancribed earlier, but a pleasant work nonetheless.
