Description:
Nigerian musician and composer. Considered the father of modern Nigerian art music. Born in Abeokuta, near Lagos, 29 May 1905. Died in Ravenna, Ohio, United States, 13 March 1987. Sowande is perhaps the most internationally known African composer of works in the European "classical" idiom. He wrote a dozen pieces for organ that show a strong influence of Anglican Church music combined with Yoruba pentatonic melodies.

He also was active in jazz and popular music with his Fela Sowande Rhythm Group.

This is perhaps the first piece of organ music I heard as it was the theme to a religious program on the local radio station. It was a popular piece of music at one time and I hope I have done it justice. Photo added.
