The genesis and the structure of the so-called Great Eighteenth are still open issues. I follow Klotz’s view that Bach intended the first seventeen pieces as an entity separate from either the Canonic Variations or BWV 668. In this perspective, BWV 667 is the last of the Leipzig chorale preludes.
