Description: | Yesterday, I received an unexpected surprise gift in my email from our talented member, Carson Cooman, who kindly sent me the organ works of Cedric Hargraves.
Cedric Hargraves (1921–2010) was born in Adelaide, Australia and lived in New Zealand from 1935. He studied the organ from 1939–41 with the prominent New Zealand organist Edgar Randall. Hargraves spent his
professional career as a pharmacist. Upon retirement, he composed a number of works for organ during the 1990s, both original and
hymn-based pieces.
The "Prelude on 'St. Peter'" is a beautiful piece. There aren't all that many preludes on
Alexander Reinagle's (1799-1877) well-known melody, usually associated with the text, "How sweet the Name of Jesus sounds," but the few that I do know are all very "nice" pieces.
THIS one, may just be the nicest of all!
It has a fine flow and good harmonic interest. Parts of it reminded me of C. V. Stanford's anthem, "The Lord is my Shepherd," but I'm sure that this is not intentional.
Quite simply, the piece works!
Due to copyright issues, I will not attach the files, but you can contact me if you are interested.
THANK YOU, Carson! Your presence on the Concert Hall is valued and appreciated! |
