Cedric Hargraves (1921–2010) was born in Adelaide, Australia and lived in New Zealand from 1935. He studied the organ from 1939–41 with the prominent New Zealand organist Edgar Randall. Hargraves spent his
professional career as a pharmacist. Upon retirement, he composed a number of works for organ during the 1990s, both original and
hymn-based pieces.
"Allegro" comes from Volume One of Hargraves' works, and the score states that it was composed in May of 1991.
It is dedicated "For J. K. H." and uses the Bible verses from Luke
1:46-7 for its inspiration.
And Mary said, My soul doth magnify the Lord,
And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour.
The work is a brisk "Allegro" with a strong feeling of rhythm and energy. In the key of C minor, the "framing sections" have nice contrasts with a softer section in E-flat, and the buildup and return to the main key is well-handled.
Fortunately, at least for my taste, he kept the piece in the minor, and did not resolve to the major at the end!
