Großes Praeludium e-moll Uploaded by: ThomasEngler Composer: Bruhns, Nicolaus Organ: Müller Grote of Sint Bavo extended Software: Hauptwerk IV Views: 188
Kauffmann's prelude to "Heut fanget an das neue Jahr" is a cleverly constructed fugue. In the exposition the theme is (halfway) answered by its own inversion. This play between the first version of the theme and its inversion continues the rest of the fugue. There seems not to be much relation between the choral melody and the fugue theme. But it is a nice piece anyway. In contrary to Kauffmann's prescription I play the prelude with full plenum, with the bass voice on the pedals. There is no indication in the manuscript that Kauffmann intended it this way, so the score is just a two stave manual version.
