Armstrong was a well-known musical composer and instructor.
1890 Organist of the First Baptist Church in Alton, then of St Paul's Church in Alton.
Instructor at the Forest Park University for Women in St. Louis, Missouri.
1890-1909 Musical Director for Shurtleff College in Godfrey, Illinois and Western Military Academy in Alton.
1890-1900 organist of the Church of the Redeemer in Alton.
1900-1908 organist of the Church of the Unity in St Louis.
After 1910 he founded the Armstrong School of Music in Alton
He was selected as one of the solo organists for the 1904 St. Louis World's Fair.
