As of this posting, composer Walter Arlen is 99 years of age and living in Santa Monica, California. An account of his very interesting life (with pictures) can be read at

In Spring of 1969, Mr. Arlen invited me to play his Sonnet for Organ (composed ca. 1966) as an interlude during the annual Spring Chorale at Loyola University, a concert that was conducted by the late Paul Salamunovich. At the time, Arlen was chair of the university's music department, as well as being music critic at the Los Angeles Times. I myself was a Classics major and not a Music major, but nonetheless managed to get quite involved in the music life on campus.
I have also uploaded to contrebombarde.com my recording of Walter Arlen's Chorale for Organ.
