| Description: | CAUTION EXTREME DYNAMIC RANGE
Sir George Thomas Thalben-Ball (1896-1987) Born in Sydney, Australia. Studied with all the "greats" of his day.... Sir Charles Stanford, Sir Hubert Parry, Sir Walford Davies, Sir Frederick Bridge and others. Organist at Temple Church in London and at Royal Albert Hall. Knighted in 1982.
This selection has been well represented on this concert hall by several great performances. I decided to give it the full "romantic" treatment, after listening to Thalben-Ball's own 1948 recording of this piece in St Mark's, North Audley Street, London, on the Norman and Beard organ built in 1915 that was doubled in size by Rushworth and Dreaper in 1930. He makes extensive use of rubato and also is not afraid to turn on a tremulant or two.
Starting with string celestes, building to almost full organ (no celestes[of course not!] or Tuba Mirabilis) ending on the Choir Dulciana without the celeste (but with the tremulant!) |
