Jay C. Batzner (b. 1974) — Cursed Motives (2009) for open instrumentation

American composer Jay C. Batzner (b. 1974) was educated at the Universities of Louisville, Kansas, and Missouri-Kansas City. He has held faculty positions at Central Michigan University and the University of Central Florida. As a composer, Batzner has been active in both acoustic and electro-acoustic music. He has served as the programming director for Electronic Music Midwest.

“Cursed Motives” (2009) is a work for open instrumentation. It consists of a series of motives which are interpreted by the performer(s) into a musical work. The composer writes: “These are all motivic ideas that I adore and have yet to work into a successful composition. Several of them have been used in different pieces but they have not found the right home yet. I don’t know if this is the right place for them, but here they are. The overall mood should be one of contemplation and tranquility.”
