Description:

The basilica has a ten stop choir organ dating back to the 19th century, located on the right in the false transept built by Aristide Cavaillé-Coll in 1872 shortly before the installation of the grand tribune organ above the entrance. This last instrument was financed from the funds collected on the occasion of the Manifestation of Faith and Hope of France and also built by the famous Aristide Cavaillé-Coll. The oak woodwork of Hungary bears this inscription “Organs of Our Lady of Lourdes, offered by the manifestation of faith and hope of France on October 6, 1872, on the feast of the Holy Rosary” . Inaugurated on September 8, 1873. Comprising twenty -five stops (twenty-one real stops plus four borrowed for the pedal keyboard, two keyboards and pedals), the organ was inaugurated by Charles-Marie Widor. It was damaged in January 1877 by a violent storm and underwent several important modifications: in 1930 and 1955 by the Toulouse factor Puget, in 1964-65 by Mr Antonio Pesce de Pau (notably equipped with electric traction) finally restored in its original design (with mechanical transmission) between 1982 and 1985 by Xavier Silbermann from Thonon-les-Bains in Haute-Savoie, where the two-meter organ was brought forward, which had the effect of enlarging the stand by two meters, even though it was originally located in the interior from the base of the bell tower, overlooking the nave. It was classified as a Historic Monument in 1977.
