Distortion

Hi

I have recently finished my DIY Hauptwerk set up and am using quality headphones to begin with. One thing I have notIced is that with full organ (Salisbury Cathedral) when playing full chords with couplers the organ sounds as if it’s struggling for wind and there is a slight waiver. Would this be a problem with my hardware or are there settings that need to be adjusted? Any help would be much appreciated.

Also, I’m hoping to get speakers soon - would Focusrite Scarlet audio interface with Behringer 2031a monitors (four) be sensible? I am a total beginner and very much out of my depth here.

Thank you so much.

Hi Nigel,

Can't say much about your distortion - keep reading sections of the Hauptwerk guide and use top quality speaker cable connections. It may all be about the quality of your audio interface.

I began with two Behringer 2031a monitors. Plenty of grunt there. I would advise against making that four - it eliminates your variety of choices. I also bought two Rokit 8" monitors, and I use a big capacity Sony Amp + speakers for channel 5+6.

The Focusrite series all demand a firewire connection rather than a USB2 input if I'm correct; hope you realise that. I eventually settled for a PreSonus Studio 1810c, which handles 6 channels.

Hi Nigel,

I experienced similar issues with the Hereford and Kaiserdom sets, which are fairly large compared to the others I own. Using a lot of stops and couplers, these caused audio cracks and glitches because of frequent spikes in CPU usage on a quad-core Intel i5-2500K. Can't remember exactly which sample quality I configured the set at (16 vs. 24 bits per sample), but according to memory requirements and the amount available on my system, I think I got away with the lower sample resolution (i.e. 16 bits).

WAV recordings were still intact tho, as these don't necessarily need to be processed in real time. (Mentioned that issue and hints at https://www.contrebombarde.com/concerthall/music/33998 with my "Kaiserdom Speed Toccata".)

As I'm still working on my monster machine (AMD Ryzen Threadripper, 12(24) real(virtual) cores, 128 GB RAM running with Win7), I can only presume that these issues should be gone on the new box -- will share my experience once it's finished.

Hi,
If your issue is not pops and crackles, but rather slight variations in volume and detuning when using large registrations, it could be the Hauptwerk wind model. Those variations do happen on real organs. If too much to your taste, you can adjust it under Organ settings >> Organ preferences >> Wind supply model, and decrease the percentage.

In case of pops and crackles, see p. 237-256 of the Hauptwerk user guide (accessible from within the Hauptwerk help menu) for extensive instructions for pc audio optimization.

Audio: RME soundcards are highly recommended, if you have the budget available the investment will probably be worth it. Speakers: you can make a very decent start using two high-quality speakers. If budget allows, 4 speakers for surround. It would be best to use speakers of the same brand and make.

It depends on which product line you get; Focusrite has many; some take USB, some take thunderbolt (firewire) and others even take Cat5.

As stated above, you need to distinguish between wind-sag and pops and crackles. If it's the latter, try adjusting the volume trim level. For instance, if you have it set to 0db, perhaps -1 or -2 will be enough so that the volume doesn't exceed your equipment's capacity.

If it's wind sag, that is part of the programming of the instrument itself. Some sample sets allow you some flexibility with this, others don't. You can experiment with activating/deactivating the wind model. Sometimes sampleset producers also need to tweak it with patches (although I doubt that's the case with the instrument in question here). I had the SP Laurenskirk transept organ and the first release had so much windsag that full organ was unusable. A patch a little while later fixed this oversight and now the organ is great.

Check the audio output level as it might be clipping.
