Hello.
I don't know about this counter problem, but I think that some real statistics would be interesting here...
evolution of the number of pieces uploaded per day ?
evolution of the number of listeners per piece,
evolution of the number of listeners per day ?
evolution of the number of uploaders ?
evolution of the number of comments ?
evolution of the number of organs used ?
and which ones are the more used ?
(But maybe some of those stats are top secret ... )

There was a bug/exploit which allowed for listener numbers to be artificially inflated:

I assume this update is addressing this problem.

Well I still don't really understand what is going on but it is depressing to see some pieces of mine which had 60 or 70 views down to 10 or so!!

Believe me, it's even more depressing -- if not even frustrating -- to see rare laborious and complex pieces with over a hundred listens and not even a single comment of acknowledgement. But I've learned to live with that...it's not the end of the world.

Hello,

Just to answer a few questions on this thread:

Why has the listener counter been updated?
There is a bug with the listener counter that allows an upload to get hundreds of views from one or a small handful of users. This can cause uploads on charts to be lopsided. To make it more fair and accurate we have updated the counter.

An upload must meet a certain number of listens before the counter becomes more strict. Anything under 100 listens on a piece does not reach that threshold and the counter is more relaxed with what it considers a 'listen'.

We are working on new features that is designed to help uploaders maximize the amount of potential listeners. They will be released on a large update. There are a lot of new features being worked on, so this update will take some time.

Hi CBadmin,

From the technical point of view, I hope that these new restrictions do not exclude anonymous listens, i.e. people who're not logged in to CB when they directly navigate to the URL of a particular piece.

Since I've issued a lot of hyperlinks on other platforms (e.g. on YouTube) to be able to refer to the piece for info and downloads, I know that quite a number of them is used on a frequent or even regular basis. To go even further, I know that some of these people are even sharing the same IP address on their households and/or company connections, which in turn would result in inaccurate stats for this kind of visitors.

Apropos YouTube: As a side note, I observed that comments and other "lazy-loading" content is not or improperly loaded if a piece is navigated to using the plain HTTP link. However, these assets are loaded properly if they're approached via HTTPS, most probably due to a "strict-HTTPS" mixed content policy. To avoid manual updates on a ton of these links to "broken content": May I kindly ask you about implementing forced HTTPS redirects? This could easily be done using .htaccess (or server config) rewrite rules if your site is running on Apache, but even on Nginx & friends this is not much more complicated. Just let me know in case you'll need a hand with this topic.

Kind regards,
Woody/mC

Thanks for updating this.
But alas, I don't think it works properly now.
I noticed that, when I respond on a comment on one of my uploads, that there are suddenly 2 views extra. That doesn't seem right, when I only go to the webpage of my upload to comment (and not pressing the Play button).
So that means that when only going to the webpage will be counted as one or two views.
I think that the problem is solved when a view is only counted when the play button is activated. Of course you don't know how long someone listens to your upload, but that's more transparant than that I get 2 views for only reacting on a comment of someone.

Hi Woody,

Thank you for the https suggestion! We have now implemented it to the site.

In terms of the counter unlogged and logged listeners are both recorded from the site as well as embeds/hyperlinks. The counter takes into consideration the IP address, browser, device, and if player has been set to repeat. Even if there are multiple computers on the same IP address that will not be a problem with the counter.

Hi Yolar,

I checked your uploads and the counter again. Everything seems to be working fine on our end. The counter only activates when a person has clicked play and not when they load a page.

From what I can tell while you were commenting on the piece 2 other people listened to it. THat would explain the extra two views.

Hi CBadmin,

Thanks a lot in return -- I can confirm that redirects work like a charm now.
Thank you as well for the counter details/explanation! Should be perfect for the use cases I mentioned.

Kind regards,
