1781 in Vienna, Wolfgang Amadé Mozart wrote twelve piano variations on the French children's folksong "Ah, vous dirai-je, Maman" (KV 265) for pianist Josepha Barbara von Auernhammer.
The original text for this 1761 published melody was a love poem. The same popular melody is also used by the English lullaby "Twinkle, twinkle, little star" and by the German Christmas carol "Morgen kommt der Weihnachtsmann" (‚Santa comes tomorrow‘).
For the first time I heard these variations as a teenager played on the organ in a Christmas concert. This music is ideally suited to introduce the sound diversity of an organ. And can bring Christmas joy.
