Amanda Parker (b. 1937) — Fanfare and Duel (1992) for organ
Amanda Parker (b. 1937) was educated at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, the University of Vermont, and Johnson State College. She was active as an organist in Vermont and Pennsylvania before her complete retirement from music.
“Fanfare and Duel” (1992) is Parker’s only musical composition, and is a surprisingly assured composition for a composer’s first (and only) piece. Outer sections of fanfare character flank the “duel,” in which a syncopated melody is passed back and forth between manuals and pedal. The composer stated that after writing this work, she began studies in composition before determining that composition was in fact “not her thing.” And thus this one highly effective work is all that remains.
