Description: | May the 4th is remembrance day in The Netherlands.
In our small Dutch church on the Costa Blanca in Spain we also commemorate
those who lost their lives in the world wars, concentration camps and military or peace
missions.
In Britain, on remembrance day, Dido's Lament, from the opera Dido and Aeneas by Henry Purcell is yearly played at the foot of the Cenotaph in Westminster, a big momument not far from Downing Street, by a military band. The queen is there and all kind of other high officials.
It is one of the finest passacaglia's ever written.
These are the words:
When I am laid, am laid in earth, May my wrongs create
No trouble, no trouble in thy breast;
Remember me, remember me, but ah! forget my fate
Remember me, but ah! forget my fate.
I found this fine organ transcription by Marc Boniteau on the internet and played it during our Dutch service. A search on the Concert Hall showed there was no earlier recording.
So here it is; hope you like it. |
