Description:
This is my 6th entry in the Lenten-Hymn-of-the-Day project. This hymn is "for" Monday, and I'm sorry that it is late.

I'm VERY glad to see so many other beautiful hymns being uploaded! THANK YOU to the performers! I hope more will join the list of hymn-players!

This shattering text by John Donne (1573-1631) makes an incredible impact. The music, composed "around" a melody and bass by John Hilton (1599-1657), is
harm. by Roy F. Kehl (1935-2011), an organist who studied at Oberlin, and his harmony is after that by the well-known Elizabeth Poston (1905-87), probably most famous for the wonderful "Jeus Christ the apple tree" carol.

Appropriately, the tune is named, "Donne", and is found at # 140 in "The Hymnal 1982" of the Episcopal Church.

Wilt thou forgive that sin, where I begun,
Which was my sin, though it were done before?
Wilt thou forgive those sins through which I run,
And do run still, though still I do deplore?
When thou hast done, thou hast not done,
For I have more.

Wilt thou forgive that sin, by which I've won
Others to sin, and made my sin their door?
Wilt thou forgive that sin which I did shun
A year or two, and wallowed in a score?
When thou hast done, thou hast not done,
For I have more.

I have a sin of fear that when I've spun
My last thread, I shall perish on the shore;
Swear by thyself, that at my death thy Son
Shall shine as he shines now, and heretofore.
And having done that, that thou hast done,
I fear no more.
