One of my favourite things is to look through charity shops for old sheet music. 9 times out of 10 what I buy is junk and ends up going back to the charity shop. Sometimes I'll like a piece or two in a book. However, this week I found a gem -- and only for 79p!

The Orpheus Voluntaries Book 2. 12 pieces composed by J E Newell in what appears to be 1910, with this book coming from the 1950s I believe. The following is thanks to klink:

Hi, I dug up the following info on J E Newell which I found in - Dictionary of Composers for the Church in Great Britain and Ireland. His date of death is not given but it seems to be about the 1910 mark. Hope it helps.

Newell, Joseph Edward (1843-?)
Born in Hunslet, near Leeds on 11 October 1843. Studied under Frederick Hird, Held a number of musical appointments in Leeds (1859-1892). Organist of St, Philip’s Church, and St Michael’s. Headingley (1866-1850). Organist and singing master of Leeds Grammar School, and of St Wilfred’s Chapel. In 1892 he moved to London, where he worked as a music arranger in the publishing business. Composed a cantata The Christian Pilgrim which was first performed at Trinity Church, Leeds in March 1889. Also composed anthems. Used pseudonyms Carlo Murretti and Nicola Podesta when composing works for guitar and mandolin.

There are a variety of pieces for every occasion in a service and everyone I have played so far is great! This little versette I decided to play on the Recit using the Diapason and Flutes.

Hope you enjoy.
