1) The Bishop’s Castle
2) By the Dee
3) Raven Square
4) New Fairholme
“A Parental Garland” was written as a tribute to the composer’s parents (Eric and Patricia Coates) and reflects the composer’s country of birth (England). The first movement was “written after a visit to Bishop’s Castle, Shropshire with a little help from Ernest Moeran.” The second movement, “By the Dee,” was “written after a visit to Llangollen (The Corn Mill) and is based on a folk tune from Cheshire.” The fourth movement, “New Fairholme” was “written after a visit to Oswestry.”
Robert Coates (b. 1954) was born in Cheshire, England and was educated at King William’s College on the Isle of Man and Royal College of Music in London. His primary teachers were Nicholas Danby, Herrick Bunney, and Allan Wicks. Since 1981, Coates has lived in Norway where he works as a church musician and composer. He has published numerous organ and choral works.
