A Proposal for a Permanent, Clean Alternative to CCH (Built for and Funded by Us)

Given this latest round of upload outages and the ongoing bot infestations, it’s clear that the current platform is struggling. When we lost three months of archives during the last "house cleaning," a few dedicated members thankfully stepped up to salvage and backup the data in case such a thing were to occur again. Instead of waiting for the next crash, we should consider a modern, independent, encyclopedic site that we, performers and producers, actually control.

I was curious about the steps that would be involved in such an endeavor. According to Gemini, it is highly feasible and surprisingly (to me) cost effective to run. The upfront costs and steps are the hurdles, but after those, it's something even I could manage alone, and I'm NOT a Computer Scientist by any means. It just requires a manager to reset passwords and such (at least according to what I read).

That said, please note, I'm not a computer scientist, so I have really no idea if the proposal by Gemini is really legit or not. I'm putting it out here because I do know that we have members who are and can vet the information and say yes, this will work, or no it won't. So, here goes.

AI says:

With today's technology, creating a stable, secure, and junk-free alternative like Contrebombarde is highly achievable. Here is how we can do it cheaply and correctly:

1. The Financial Model: Tiered Creator Subscriptions

• Paid Publishing: We return to the tiered subscription model for performers and producers to fund the site cleanly.
• The $0 Bot Filter: Forcing a credit card check via Stripe for uploading accounts completely stops automated spam networks. Spammers will not pay a fee just to drop junk links.
• Free Listening: Public streaming and browsing remain completely free and un-gated to ensure maximum reach for the music.

2. The Infrastructure: Cheap, Decoupled, and Bulletproof

Modern web architecture has evolved. We do not have to host everything on a single, fragile monolithic server:
• Isolated Audio Storage: Audio files are stored securely in independent object storage (like Backblaze B2).
• No Cascading Deletions: If an admin deletes a spam profile or runs a maintenance script, it is physically impossible to accidentally wipe out legitimate media files. Soft deletes and automated point-in-time recovery mean data loss becomes a thing of the past.
• Wiping Out Bandwidth Fees: By using a modern CDN layer (like Cloudflare), streaming data fees are effectively zeroed out. The total ongoing operating cost for the entire archive would likely sit between $25 and $75 a month.

3. The Build: AI-Accelerated Development

The massive multi-thousand-dollar upfront development hurdle is gone. Modern AI coding models can instantly generate the core database schemas, Stripe subscription links, and storage API connections. The project no longer requires months of manual coding—it requires a technical architect from our community to assemble the pieces.

Moving Forward: Finding Our Champion

We already have the culture of supporting tiered pricing, and we have much of the archived historical data sitting safely on private hard drives.
1. To the performers and producers: Would a modest monthly subscription fee be a fair trade for a permanent, stable, and ad-free archive dedicated strictly to our work?
2. To our tech-minded members: Who among our collectors and code-savvy folks would be willing to act as the architect to spin up an initial, AI-assisted prototype using the salvaged data?
Let's stop fighting an outdated system and build a reliable home for our recordings. I welcome your thoughts, inputs, and technical suggestions below.

Ha, even the poll I tried to set up is buggy.

Here's what those 50 character-limited lines should say:

• Option 1: Yes—I’m a creator ready to pay a subscription.
• Option 2: Yes—if the subscription pricing fits my budget.
• Option 3: Tech Help—I can assist with coding or data.
• Option 4: Undecided—I’ll wait to see if it’s stable.
• Option 5: Listener Only—I just want free public streaming.

Unfortunately I'm not a Computer Scientist either, but I think this is an excellent proposal, and give my full support. Hopefully, it will work out to be feasible... I will look forwards to what the more tech-minded members have to say!
