Description: | Václav Nelhýbel (1919–1996) — Prelude on “Tisíckrát pozdravujem tebe” (1988) for organ
A prelude on the Czech hymn “Tisíckrát pozdravujem tebe” [A. H. Landrasse, 1830]
Václav Nelhýbel (1919–1996) was born in Polanka, Czechoslovakia and was trained in Prague. After further studies in Switzerland, and a period as music director of Radio Free Europe in Munich, he came to the United States in 1957 where he remained for the rest of his life, holding teaching positions at a number of universities including the University of Massachusetts, Lowell and the University of Scranton. Nelhýbel’s very large output is filled with works in all forms: from grand operas to myriad pieces for student performers. He is particularly highly-regarded for his excellent music for young musicians and his many works for concert band. Nelhýbel’s musical language drew heavily on elements of medieval and Renaissance modality, explored within a contemporary Czech context.
