Michael Canales (b. 1963) — Fanfare in G (2014) for organ
“Fanfare in G” (2014) takes its opening from Bruckner’s fourth symphony, but the rest of the piece’s harmonic language is more evocative of Enrique Granados, whose repertoire is very familiar to the composer through his work as a classical guitarist.
Michael Canales (b. 1963) has received major grants from organizations such as the Ralph M. Parsons Foundation, Ann and Gordon Getty Foundation, and the Nevada Arts Council for his work as a composer and conductor. He has composed music in many genres including opera and symphonic works. As a conductor, Canales specializes in opera, and he has conducted the works of Mozart, Puccini, Verdi, and Wagner, as well as much other standard repertoire. He was the founder and director of Pasadena Lyric Opera for seven seasons. Canales is also an accomplished classical guitarist, as well as a pianist, organist, and percussionist.
