Sidney S. Campbell, MVO (1909-1974) was a student of Ernest Bullock and Harold Darke, and held appointments at West Ham Parish Church, St. Peter's Croydon, St. Peter's Collegiate Church, Wolverhampton, Ely Cathedral, Southwark Cathedral, Canterbury Cathedral, and finally of St. George's Chapel, Windsor.
His compositions ranged through church and organ music, and his enthusiasm for French organ works is clearly reflected in the colorful style of his own compositions.
This work, "Gaudeamus" appears as part of "A Festive Album," published by OUP in 1956. It begins with a fanfare (Andnate maestoso), and soon passes to a bristlling fugal section (Giocoso), before building up to a huge conclusion.
The title "Gaudeamus," translates as "Let us rejoice!"
God is gone up with a shout, and the Lord with the sound of a trumpet! (Psalm 47, verse 5) |
