Grieg's op. 34 consists of two Elegiac Melodies composed for orchestra, "Heart's Wounds" and "Last Spring". This one is "Last Spring". Here, "last" refers to "final", not "previous". This movement imagines the spring season of rebirth tempered with the realization that the viewer may not live to see another. I've lost some dear friends this spring, to whom I dedicate this post.
