Sweeter the bells never sound is a well-known German Christmas carol dating from the 19th century.
The text is written to the German theologian and educator Friedrich Wilhelm Kritzinger (1816-1890). The melody comes from a Thuringian folk song before 1826 [1] on the also popular art song Watch as the sun sinket there was sung (1847) by Karl Kummerel (1822-1857) [2]. The melody was widespread (The love in my grave, etc.) also in numerous other variants. [3]
The song creates a hopeful and healing atmosphere. The bell sound is a symbol of peace, joy and Christmas joy.
