Description: | This is my 15th entry in the Lenten Hymn-of-the Day project. I'm behind, but I'm catching up. THANKS to ALL who are uploading hymns!
This tune, "An Wasserflüssen Babylon" has always been one of my favorites. It was composed by Wolfgang Dachstein , ca. 1487-1553. He was, prior to the Reformation, a monk at Strassburg, and organist of the Cathedral. In 1524 he espoused the cause of the Reformation, and in 1525 was appointed organist and assistant preacher at St. Thomas's Church, which offices he held till at least 1530.
The text, "Ein Lämmlein" is by Paulus Gerhardt (1607-1676 ), and this translation is a composite, as found in the Lutheran Hymnal. The original hymn has 10 verses, the hymnal gives 6, but I've used the first 4, as I like the "complete package" that they made.
I should also mention that I have transposed this chorale from "F' to "G", so, it is pretty "high" - especially when you consider that Stade is already pitched WELL above our "normal" pitch. |
