The Fantasia and Fugue in G minor BWV 542 was composed immediately after the death of his wife, Maria Barbara, in 1720.
The great and wonderful drama of Fantasia
evokes this event so painful.
The lofty Fugue four-voice softens the pain in the perfection of harmony, and clearly shows the rise of the soul of Bach to the thought of God, and in fact ends gloriously in a major key, with a cadence that is called "Piccarda".
