| Description: | Josef Seger (born Josef Ferdinand Norbert Segert, last name also Seeger or Seegr) (21 March 1716 – 22 April 1782) was a Bohemian organist, composer, and educator. After graduating in philosophy from the Charles University in Prague and studying music under Bohuslav Matej Cernohorský, Jan Zach, and others, Seger became organist of two churches in Prague and remained there until his death.
An extremely prolific composer, Seger became one of the most important representatives of the Czech organ school of the 18th century. He was also an influential teacher: his pupils included Jan Antonín Koželuh and Josef Myslivecek, and his figured bass exercises served many generations of teachers.
To me, it wouldn't be Christmas without using the Cymbelstern at least once! Since the Trost organ has 2 (C &G), you must choose. Since the fugue is in G...
The "Toccata pastorell" is very "Italianate" in style, and it wouldn't be hard to imagine it being played by strings. The "Fuga" is more "organ-like," and based upon the Czech Christmas Carol, "Narodil se Kristus Pán."
The first verse translates as:
Christ the Lord to us is born, Alleluia!
On this joyous Christmas morn, Alleluia!
Of a Virgin lowly,
He, the King most holy,
Born this day to save us.
The registration is as follows:
Toccata - Hauptwerk: Viole d'Gambe 8', Gemshorn 8', Rohrflöte 4'
Fuga - Oberwerk: Hohl-Flöte 8', Wald-Flöte 2'
