This chorale prelude is also known as “Ricercar pro Tempore Quadragesimae”. Most of the music of Fischer is lost nowadays. Luckily a small collection survives in manuscript Mus. Ms. 30196, owned by the Staatsbibliothek Berlin. Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach wrote that his father (Johann Sebastian Bach) considered Fischer as one of the greatest composers of his time. A look at the score of this piece can give a clue as to why: the contrapuntal treatment of the subject is impeccable.
I transcribed this piece a year ago, but forgot to post it. And I almost did again this year. So, on the brink of Easter, here it is.
