Carlo Valtolina (1916–2001) — Pastorale (1991) for organ
Italian composer Carlo Valtolina (1916–2001) was born in Cornate d’Adda. Blind from age three (from measles), Valtolina studied music at the Institute for the Blind and the “Giuseppe Verdi” Conservatory (both in Milan). He was for many years organist in Cornate d’Adda and director of the Coro San Giorio; he was also an active teacher and composer. Valtolina’s musical style is extremely traditional, with no hint of the developments of the 20th century. His organ output consists of 25 pastorales, 64 versets, and several other short pieces. In his retirement years, he wrote a pastorale each December as a greeting to send to his musical friends and colleagues.
