This, the most emotionally charged piece of the collection 'Howells' Clavichord' was written 'for Gerald: on the morrow of 27th September, 1956'. This was the very day following Gerald Finzi's untimely death. Howells had seen him the day before at the Gloucester Three Choirs Festival. Paul Spicer mentions in his biography on Howells that two pieces had been written with the same title, the composer preferring the published one. Five pieces have been arranged by Robert Fielding from Howells' Clavichord and the sheet music for these is available to buy on Amazon.
