Francis Alan Jackson CBE (born 2 October 1917) is a British organist and composer. He was the organist and director of music at York Minster for 36 years. He was born in Malton, Yorkshire and received his early education as a chorister at York Minster under his predecessor, Sir Edward Bairstow. He was appointed organist and director of music at York Minster in 1946 and held these positions until his retirement in 1982.
Both nationally and internationally acclaimed, Jackson has given recitals and concerts all over the world, and made numerous recordings.
His extensive output of sacred and secular music includes canticles, anthems, hymn tunes (including the widely sung "East Acklam"), organ sonatas and other organ pieces such as "Diversion for Mixtures", two acclaimed monodramas - Daniel in Babylon and A Time of Fire, an overture, Brigantia, a concerto, a symphony, and solo songs. Jackson's creative output has continued since his retirement. He is still going strong at the age of 99!
In 1984, Jackson composed "Five Preludes on English Hymns," and "East Acklam" is in the collection.
Marked "Andante tranquillo" I just couldn't find a "version" that pleased me, so, you have 3 to choose from - hopefully one will "hit the mark" for you.
The one made on the Haverhill Binns was the first, and probably the "best" of the bunch. For some reason, it seemed to "un-tranquillo," and I tried to "slow it down," with varying success. First instincts are usually best...
The warmth of Jackson's writing is very comforting, and matches the sweep of the melody. The work is dedicated "to Margaret and Ramsay Silver."
