Theophil Forchhammer (1847-1923) was born in Schiers/Switzerland. He studied music in Stuttgart and became organist at Thalwil near Zurich, at Olten and later at Wismar and Quedlinburg. In 1886 he was appointed organist of the Cathedral at Magdeburg, following August Gottfried Ritter.
Forchhammer was a highly regarded organist and wrote over 1800 chorale preludes, of which only a small number were ever published. The bulk of his compositions were destroyed in World War II.
