Description: | Yesterday, I received an unexpected surprise gift in my email from our talented member, Carson Cooman, who kindly sent me the organ works of Cedric Hargraves.
Cedric Hargraves (1921–2010) was born in Adelaide, Australia and lived in New Zealand from 1935. He studied the organ from 1939–41 with the prominent New Zealand organist Edgar Randall. Hargraves spent his
professional career as a pharmacist. Upon retirement, he composed a number of works for organ during the 1990s, both original and
hymn-based pieces.
The "Prelude on 'Love Unknown'" is more of a "commentary," as opposed to an actual prelude. I saw this because it "implies" the melody, rather than overtly stating it. My first reaction was "lukewarm," but after two or three playings, I'd grown to like it - a lot.
My only "complaint" would be the ending.
The piece, in the key of E-flat is all set up for the conclusion, but the final phrases take the work into A-flat - and then stop...
I had to restrain myself from adding a final E-flat major chord! I don't know, maybe this ending IS better. What do you think?!?
This piece is based on John Ireland's (1879-1962) glorious Passiontide hymn, "My song is Love unknown." A photo of John Ireland is attached.
Due to copyright issues, I will not attach the files, but you can contact me if you are interested.
THANK YOU, Carson! Your presence on the Concert Hall is valued and appreciated! |
