Walther provides us with an extended set of 10 variations on this well-known chorale, more commonly known as "O Haupt voll Blut und Wunden".

Verse 1: Manuals only, cantus firmus in soprano

Verse 3: Time signature change to 6/4, manuals only with cantus firmus in soprano
Verse 4: Back to common time, manuals only, cantus firmus in soprano
Verse 5: Manuals only with cantus firmus in soprano featuring frequent syncopation in the right hand
Verse 6: Time signature change to 12/8, manuals-only with cantus firmus in soprano
Verse 7: Time signature change back to common time. Pedal makes its first appearance in this verse, and carries the cantus firmus
Verse 8: Manuals only with the cantus firmus in free canon between the bass and soprano lines
Verse 9: Pedal returns in this verse, carrying the cantus firmus
Verse 10: Also for manuals and pedal. Cantus firmus in pedal, but fragments also appear from time to time in the soprano line.
