Composer: Trier Gesangbuch, 1847
Sample Producer: Lavender Audio
Sample Set: Hereford Cathedral Willis Organ
Software: Hauptwerk IV
Genre: Hymn
Description:
For the last several days I've uploaded things "related to" the Gregorian sequence, "Victimae Paschali Laudes".

The text of this hymn is based upon "Victimae Paschali," but the words are "new" and original, and were written by the Rev. G. R. Woodward (1848-1934).

The music, found in the "Trier Gesangbuch" of 1847, was harmonized by Charles Wood (15 June 1866 – 12 July 1926), the Irish composer and teacher; his pupils included Ralph Vaughan Williams at Cambridge and Herbert Howells at the Royal College of Music.

Wood wrote quite a bit of fine organ music, some of which I've uploaded. A few of his larger pieces, such as the "Prelude and Fugue in G Minor" are significant, but almost impossible to locate. :-(

He is probably most well-known for his anthem, "O thou, the central orb."

The appeal of the music uploaded here is immediate, having more the feeling of a "carol" instead of a more "churchy" hymn.

The score is attached below, as well as photos of Woodward (playing a euphonium) and Wood.

(The full text is given below.)

Final "Alleluyas" played as the introduction.

Jesus Christ is risen:
The feast, good Christians, therefore keep;
The Lamb has bled to save the sheep
Christ innocent, our ransom paid,
Mankind and God at one hath made:
Alleuya, Alleluya.

Jesus Christ is risen,
Speak Mary Magdalene, and say
What sawest thou upon thy way?
'I saw the grave,' and there adored
The glory of the risen Lord':
Alleuya, Alleluya.

Jesus Christ is risen,
'Within the grave on either hand
I saw a white-robed angel stand;
My Saviour, Christ, my hope, my stay
Hath risen from the tomb today':
Alleuya, Alleluya.

Jesus Christ is risen,
We know for certain, truth to tell,
That Christ arose from death and hell;
And while Thy Paschal song we sing,
Have pity on us, Victor-king:
Alleuya, Alleluya.
