Description: | Our member "studens" wrote as a reaction to an earlier upload of this piece on the concert hall:
The title of the piece as given in IMSLP is misspelled -- the "c" in "dominicos" is an error. It should be "Retirada del emperador de los dominios de España" (= "from the Spanish dominions", not "the Spanish Dominicans"), most likely referring to the emperor Charles VI and his forced withdrawal from Spain in the War of the Spanish Succession.
Thanks very much, studens!
In August 1392 en route to Brittany with his army in the forest of Le Mans, Charles suddenly went mad and slew four knights and almost killed his brother, Louis I, Duke of Orléans
Charles' bouts of insanity became more frequent and of longer duration. During these attacks, he had delusions, believing he was made of glass or denying he had a wife and children.
As the subject of this piece refers to happenings in Spain, I played it on a Spanish organ. |
