Description: | Here the Chorale tune is turned upside down. In German, this is called "Umkehrung", which means "reversal", a term also used in judicial proceedings when a verdict is overturned (reversed). Since the text of this Chorale is a plea not to punish the sinner, inversion (Umkehrung) of the Choral tune symbolizes reversing judgement, choosing to be merciful.
(composed 09.Dec.2018)
Straf mich nicht in deinem Zorn,
großer Gott verschone;
ach! laß mich nicht sein verlor'n,
nach Verdienst nicht lohne!
hat die Sünd'
Dich entzünd't,
lösch' ab in dem Lamme
Deines Grimmes Flamme.
Here is my attempt at a translation:
Punish me not in Thy wrath,
God Almighty, spare me;
Oh, do not let me become lost,
do not judge me by my merit!
Though my sins
have inflamed Thee,
let the Lamb quell
Thy terrible passion. |
