Here is a stunning and meditative setting of Herzliebster Jesu. This piece invites the listener to truly sense the sorrow of this hymn:
"Ah, holy Jesus, how hast Thou offended,
That man to judge Thee hath in hate pretended?
By foes derided, by Thine own rejected,
O most afflicted."
One of the things that I lament as a Catholic is the traditional liturgical directive to cut back all instrumental music during Lent (which means no organ solos). I believe this piece deserves its proper place in the repertoire and is absolutely worthy of sacred liturgy.
I'm attaching a newly-engraved copy of the score. It is formatted to fit a US Legal sheet as this allowed the whole work to fit nicely on one page and imitated rather nicely the source score. While my performance is not a note-perfect (I truly bring the "human element" to organ playing...) I hope you enjoy it!
