Description: | Thomas Åberg (b. 1952) — In the Garden: Frosty Morning (1999) for organ
"In the Garden: Frosty Morning" (1999) begins with a somber melody, which then unfolds towards a rich, inner chorale-like climax. In the final coda of the piece, perhaps one can hear the dripping of the gradually melting ice as the sun rises on this “frosty morning.” The composer wrote the following comments: “At this time in 1999, I lived in the countryside of Sweden with a huge garden. One frosty morning I received the message that one of my friends had been diagnosed with cancer with a very small chance to survive. I started immediately to write this piece—first as therapy for myself—but also with the thought that I would probably be asked to play at the funeral. But then a miracle happened—my friend had an operation, chemotherapy, and totally recovered from the disease one year later. My friend is still alive and doesn’t know anything about this story. In a more general sense, this music was certainly written as a form of unconscious self-therapy for life's more difficult crossroads.”
