Description:
Grimoaldo Macchia (b. 1972) — Fantasia and Fugue on B-A-C-H (2017) for organ

"Fantasia and Fugue on B-A-C-H" (2017) was written for Klemens Schnorr, organ professor for many years at the University of Freiburg, Germany and cathedral organist at Freiburg Minster. The musical material for the work is a four-note theme: the letters B-A-C-H (the last name of Johann Sebastian Bach) treated as a musical motive: B-flat, A, C, B-natural (“H” in German note naming conventions). Starting with Bach himself, this theme has been used by a truly enormous number of composers over the centuries. A free fantasia precedes a short fugue (fughetta), all based on the B-A-C-H theme.

Grimoaldo Macchia (b. 1972) was born in Rome and began his musical studies there at the Arts Academy. He later graduated with honors in piano and composition from the Conservatory of Perugia, where he studied composition primarily with Stefano Bracci. For more than ten years he was a professor of music at the Junior International Institute in Rome. Macchia has had an active career as composer, music director, and organist in Europe, including extended appointments at St. Boniface's Basilica in Rome and St. George's Church, Arth, Switzerland. His organ compositions appear in the catalogs of numerous music publishers around the world.
