| Description: | Charles Grey (1849-1923) was born in Norfolk, England. His father was also an organist.
He taught at the London College of Music, and published quite a number of compositions, most of which are of a light nature.
"Cantilène Dramatique" was published by Schott around 1900. It is the seventh in a collection Seven Pieces. Schott was very careless about putting the date on their publications, but 1900 is a good guess for this piece. :-)
I did this upload (partially) to demonstrate the GREATLY IMPROVED releases/voicing on the Hill Swell Oboe - with and without tremulant.
The sound of the stop is now relaxed, beautiful and natural, without any of the "release burp" that previously annoyed some listeners/users.
Like all of Grey's writing, he isn't very "deep," but he's always tuneful, and makes the organ speak in both delicate and commanding tones.
The main theme is very "classical," and reminded somewhat of Mendelssohn. It is given a good treatment with some subtle variations.
It also serves as a good "etude" as the melody played in octaves is elusive and tricky to get right!
Although this upload has been carefully normalized, you may need to adjust your volume, since much of the piece is relatively quiet, but this changes dramatically and suddenly at the end!
Grey was popular in his day. I think his good tunes and audience appeal works well with his lighthearted and direct approach.
