Grimoaldo Macchia (b. 1972) — Toccata (from Cathedral Suite) (2017) for organ
“Cathedral Suite” (2017) was written for Marko Hakanpää, organist of the Parish of St. Michael in Turku, Finland. The three-movement work is entirely unified in its material and is primarily based on a theme stated at the outset. “A Joyful Intrada” treats the theme in the manner of a festive processional. The brief “Cantique,” is a lyrical aria. The concluding “Toccata” is festive and energetic and combines the introductory material of the second movement (a harmonized rising scale) with the main melody. In the final coda, a series of clusters fill the room with sound before one last, broad statement of the main theme.
Grimoaldo Macchia (b. 1972) was born in Rome and began his musical studies there at the Arts Academy. He later graduated with honors in piano and composition from the Conservatory of Perugia, where he studied composition primarily with Stefano Bracci. For more than ten years he was a professor of music at the Junior International Institute in Rome. Macchia has had an active career as composer, music director, and organist in Europe, including extended appointments at St. Boniface's Basilica in Rome and St. George's Church, Arth, Switzerland. His organ compositions appear in the catalogs of numerous music publishers around the world.
