Description:
Maurice Gordon Burgess (1884-1964) was organist of St. Michael's College, Tenbury, Dulwich College, and of Eastbourne College.

He published a number of organ works, some with interesting titles like "Scenes Pittoresques," but this piece, which I found on IMSLP is the only work of his that I have ever seen.

"Postlude in G Minor" was published by The Vincent Music Co. Ltd. in 1911. It gave the "Programme Note" for this piece as: "A most suitable composition for use as a voluntary after service, and also effective as a recital piece, having a bold rhythm and man good passages of imitation. The middle section in Bb (meno mosso) is a good contrast to the opening subject, and gives the opportunity for effective registration."

I would say that describes this piece very well! The one thing I would say is that this has a more "modern" feel to it, despite the fact that it dates back to 1911. If I heard this, and you told me that it came from the 1940's I would believe it, particularly in the "louder" sections.

I did this in what I would call a "parish church way," using the resources of the organ, but avoiding anything in excess.

I've had this laying around for months, intending to do it on Peterborough, and I'm glad that I finally did so today. :-)

The score is attached below.

I could find no pictures of Maurice Gordon Burgess, but I did find photos of the famous, sadly now closed, St. Michael's College, Tenbury, the place that was SO important in the great revival of the English choral tradition. Also attached are photos of Dulwich College, which still has a choir of men and boys - much to my surprise and great pleasure, and photos of Eastbourne College.
