Hello, organ colleagues and friends! Submitting my FIRST upload for your listening -- thank you in advance for feedback and your time to listen!
I was surprised to find (apparently) that this work hasn't been uploaded as yet. It is currently one of my favorite, both for its joy to play and hear as well as its reference and sentiment to Psalm 42.
The work itself is based on hymn GENEVAN42 from Louis Bourgeois (1551), which many of us know from the popular Advent hymn "Comfort, Comfort Ye My People". I'm not personally familiar with other settings of the hymn, but John Propitius takes a very different approach. There are four movements -- Chorale - Trio - Marche - Toccata -- and a Finale, each of which follows Verses 1-3 & 5 of the psalm. [editoral: to be honest, I'm assuming it relates to the Psalm....not fully certain it is not to a hymn text; however it certainly works!]. The chorale Finale is, in my opinion, one of the more awe-inspiring passages one might hear.
I hope you all enjoy the work which I have come to enjoy so much. A note about me: it's rare I can get through a piece, especially 13', without something silly happening, or dealing with a page-turn, registration, dog-barking..whatever. This recording, and accompanying YouTube video is live, unedited. It is certainly not perfect, and I'm still "settling" into the performance of it since it's new. But just wanted to share for the sake of the work!
And thank all of you for the many posts which I've enjoyed and has broadened my awareness and perspective of repertoire and playing!
